Top 10 Best Games of 2026 So Far

Top 10 Best Games of 2026 So Far

Halfway through 2026 and the backlog is already rude. Launch calendars stacked Resident Evil Requiem, Forza Horizon 6, 007 First Light, Capcom’s lunar gamble Pragmata, and a Switch 2 Pokémon life sim that quietly ate weekends. GTA 6 is still the November eclipse — but the first half already earned its own ranking.

This is SignalSpawn’s mid-year Top 10: games released (or fully out of early access) from January through mid-July 2026. We weighed critical consensus, how often we actually booted them again, and whether they felt like events — not just product drops. Count down from 10.

“Japan awaits — Horizon’s biggest open-world driving adventure yet.”

Quick rules: no unreleased titles (sorry, GTA VI and Wolverine). Remakes and new mainline entries count. Rankings are ours — Metacritic’s mid-year chart informed the shortlist, but taste still gets a vote.

10. Nioh 3

Platforms: PS5, PC

Team Ninja stopped apologizing for depth. Dual samurai/ninja stances, era-hopping yokai campaigns, and that familiar “one more shrine” muscle memory make Nioh 3 the purest skill fantasy of the first half. It is not welcoming. It is magnetic.

Play it if: You want a combat thesis, not a tour guide — and you like dying with purpose.

9. Mewgenics

Edmund McMillen’s long-gestating cat genetics chaos finally shipped — and the Steam discourse still has not calmed down. Breeding loops, tactical scraps, and that signature McMillen unease collide into something that feels illegal for a “cute” premise.

Play it if: You want an indie that refuses to behave — and you are fine explaining the cat science to friends.

8. Pokémon Pokopia

Platforms: Nintendo Switch 2

The Switch 2 needed a living-room identity beyond ports. Pokopia — life sim, Ditto avatar, co-op towns — became the soft-power argument for the hardware: lower intensity, higher “one more day” gravity. Metacritic’s mid-year list put it near the top for a reason.

Play it if: You want Pokémon without the route grind — or a Switch 2 game you can share on the couch.

7. Pragmata

Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, PC

Capcom’s lunar sci-fi finally stuck the landing after years of teaser culture. Hugh-and-Diana teamwork, hack-to-expose combat, and a father-daughter warmth that Shacknews staff independently crowned mid-year. Weird premise. Clean execution.

Play it if: You want Capcom systems craft without another zombie mansion — or a moonbase that feels lonely in the right way.

6. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced

Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC

The Jackdaw is still the protagonist. Ubisoft’s 2026 remake keeps the horizon shot that sold a generation of pirate hats, then modernizes the friction without sanding off the shanty. A July launch that already feels like a catalog staple.

Play it if: You want open-water fantasy more than map-icon aerobics — or you never finished the 2013 original on modern hardware.

5. Saros

Platforms: PS5

Housemarque’s Carcosa roguelike shooter is Returnal’s meaner cousin: DualSense-first gunfeel, Rahul Kohli’s haunted conviction, and runs that punish autopilot. Exclusive, sharp, and the PS5 game people keep recommending when someone says “I’m bored of live service.”

Play it if: You want skill-based third-person chaos with a story that earns its loops.

4. 007 First Light

Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, PC

IO Interactive treated Bond like a character, not a license checklist. Young 007, globetrotting set pieces, Hitman DNA without turning every mission into a silent duck walk. “Earn the Number” stopped being a slogan the week it launched.

Play it if: You want spy fantasy with agency — stealth, charm, or a loud Plan B.

3. Mina the Hollower

Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, PC

Yacht Club Games followed Shovel Knight with a whip-and-burrow adventure that critics treated like a mid-year cheat code. Pixel craft, dungeon rhythm, and a cursed-island mission that never feels like nostalgia cosplay.

Play it if: You miss precise 2D adventure games that respect your thumbs.

2. Resident Evil Requiem

Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, PC

Capcom’s RE9 moment: Grace Ashcroft’s FBI nightmare colliding with Leon’s unfinished history. Horror that still scares, action that still pops, and a February launch that owned discourse for weeks. If 2026 has a mainstream GOTY frontrunner, this is still wearing the jacket.

Play it if: You want survival horror that remembers both the flashlight and the magazine.

1. Forza Horizon 6

Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PC (PS5 later in 2026)

Playground Games took the Horizon circus to Japan — Tokyo scale, countryside punch, 550+ cars — and critics answered with the mid-year Metacritic crown. It is still the easiest “put this on for friends” masterpiece of 2026: beautiful, deep, and aggressively replayable.

Play it if: You want the year’s purest joy machine — or a Japan road trip that does not require a passport.

Honorable mentions

Just outside the cut: Schrödinger’s Call and other PC critical darlings that spiked Metacritic, DOOM: The Dark Ages — Revelations for pure July combat dopamine, and Marathon for being the multiplayer argument everyone is still fighting about. Strong games. Different nights.

What comes next

The back half of 2026 still has GTA VI (November 19), Gears of War: E-Day, Marvel’s Wolverine, and whatever Trailer 3 decides to detonate. This list will age — that is the point of a mid-year check-in. Bookmark it, argue with it, and tell us what we underranked.
