Fortnite Conversations go live July 30 — with 36 AI-voiced personas

Epic Games is taking Fortnite’s AI NPCs out of the lab. Starting July 30 with v41.30, Conversations exits Experimental — UEFN creators can publish islands with LLM-powered characters that hold unscripted dialogue instead of hand-authored trees.

Creators define personality, knowledge, and behavior with short prompts; NPCs can remember session events and even trigger gameplay. Under the hood, Google’s Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite handles audio-in and text responses, while ElevenLabs turns those replies into speech. Epic says it does not store player audio.

36 personas, locked voices, hard rules

Epic locked consistent voices and personas onto 36 original Fortnite characters when used as NPCs — Fishstick, Peely, Cuddle Team Leader, Agent Jonesy, The Imagined, and more. Voices come from independent professional actors who agreed to train island-specific models; a subset becomes non-editable on publish. Epic still plans guild talks about original Battle Royale voice actors.

Updated Developer Rules (1.22) ban medical/mental-health personas, romantic/intimate companion roleplay, and attempts to jailbreak safety systems — with bans on the table. After last year’s Darth Vader experiment went viral for swearing, Epic is watching capacity closely and may add rate limits once traffic spikes.
