Xbox doubles down: Gears E-Day and Clockwork Revolution are permanent exclusives

Xbox’s exclusivity U-turn is no longer a Showcase one-liner. In follow-up interviews, Chief Content Officer Matt Booty and Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball framed Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as permanent console exclusives — not timed windows — while admitting the broader portfolio still looks messy on purpose.

“I wouldn’t overly fixate on single player. I think that’s a good rule of thumb, but it certainly isn’t something that’s carved in stone.”

— Matt Booty, Xbox Chief Content Officer (GamesRadar / Push Square)

What is locked — and what isn’t

E-Day (October 6, 2026) includes six-player online co-op and still counts as an Xbox exclusive in Microsoft’s new definition. Live-service giants such as Call of Duty remain multiplatform under Activision deal constraints through 2033. Halo: Campaign Evolved, Fable, and Forza Horizon 6 stay on PlayStation because those commitments predated the strategy shift.

Ball’s clearest line for hardware buyers: exclusives have to be a reason to own an Xbox again. PC remains inside the Xbox tent — Steam and Microsoft Store releases still count — which is why “exclusive” in 2026 rarely means console-only in the 2010s sense.

On ResetEra and r/xbox, players are less angry about E-Day staying home than about the mixed messaging: three of Xbox’s “four horsemen” still heading to PS5 while Gears is held back. Booty says future date announcements will ship with platform lists attached — the minimum clarity bar after a year of confusion.
